Fine arts exhibition honours Viet Nam - RoK lacquer
Update: Dec 01, 2015
Thirty-nine lacquer paintings from the Republic of Korea (RoK) and Viet Nam are being showcased at an exhibition which officially kicked off at the Viet Nam Fine Art Museum in Ha Noi on November 30.

The exhibition, themed ‘Lacquerware - Viet Nam and Ottchil - the RoK’, features 27 ottchil (lacquer in Korean) paintings by 25 of the RoK’s painters and 12 pieces by Vietnamese artists.

The exhibits depict the beauty of the landscapes as well as the daily life of the people in both two countries.

On the occasion, a range of workshops, seminars and forums will be held on December 1 at the RoK’s Culture Centre (42 Nguyen Du street, Ha Noi), helping the two countries’ artists to learn more about their traditional lacquer arts.

In Viet Nam, lacquer is a special type of material extracted from resin of the ‘son’ (lacquer) trees as well as mother of pearl and inlaid sea shells.

Meanwhile, artists in the RoK use the sap from ott-namu trees combined with mother of pearl and inlaid sea shells as the main material for their art works.

The exhibition is expected to contribute to promoting cultural and arts exchange, as well as mutual understanding between the two peoples.

Director of the RoK’s Culture Centre Park Nark Jong expressed his hope that this exhibition would bring lacquer painting in Viet Nam and ottchil arts in the RoK closer to people in both countries, as well as open up further co-operation between the two sides’ painters.

The exhibition ‘Lacquerware - Viet Nam and Ottchil - the RoK’ will last through December 12.
