Tết is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture and celebrates the arrival of the new year. Vietnamese people prepare for Tết by making special holiday food including bánh chưng, and bánh dày and dried young bamboo soup (canh măng). Vietnamese people believe that the first visitor to the family home for the year determines the family's fortune for the rest of the year. On the very first day of Tết, children will receive a red envelope containing money from elders in a tradition known as mừng tuổi (happy new age) in the north and lì xì in the south. During Tết, the entire country is decorated and a feeling of celebration envelops the entire country.
