This countrywide festival celebrates the lives of the ancient Vietnamese rulers during the Hong Bang period. Known as the Hùng Vương, which translates directly into Brave King, these fearless leaders are the subjects of several famous Vietnamese folktales. The national public holiday is celebrated every year at the Hùng Temple during Hung Kings’ Temple festival (Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương orlễ hội đền Hùng). Approximately seven million people make the pilgrimage to the temple during the festival, with offerings of prayers and incense for their ancestors. The temple is located in Phú Thọ province and is considered the most sacred historical site in Vietnam.
