Whale Festival
01 Jan 1970 - 01 Jan 1970 | Vung Tau

Held in the southern city of Vung Tau, the Whale Festival celebrates whales, which Vietnamese consider sacred creatures. According to legend, Emperor Gia Long was saved from drowning by a herd of whales. Fishermen avoid referring to the majestic creatures by their names and instead address them as the Ong Nam Hai (Whale Gods.) The festival takes place over two days and includes offerings to the sea and a boat procession, celebrating the fishermen’s love and respect for the whales.
