Ha Giang province promotes Mong ethnic cultural identity preservation

Over the past years, the northeastern mountainous province of Ha Giang has proposed solutions to preserve and promote specific traditional cultural values of the Mong ethnic minority group, contributing to building the province imbued with national identities.

The preservation and promotion of cultural identities of the Mong ethnic group was concretised in action plans. In 2013, Ha Giang provincial Party Committee promulgated Action Program 62 - CTr/TU on developing ethnic culture association with tourism promotion on the stone plateau in the 2013-2020; Ha Giang provincial People’s Committee issued Plan 132/KH - UBND dated July 26th, 2013 on the implementation of Action Program 62 to guide different levels, agencies and sectors to promote tourism in association with the preservation of ethnic culture and promotion of Mong ethnic cultural identities; restore architectural work imbued with Mong ethnic culture such as Mong King's house, old streets in  Dong Van district.

In addition, programs and projects related to Mong ethnic culture, such as projects on creating Mong ethnic musical instruction in Meo Vac district and on the preservation of Mong ethnic traditional village, have also been prioritized.

The province also uphold the prestige of heads of villages and hamlets, artisans, artists, teachers and Mong ethnic people in the preservation of Mong ethnic culture, such as organizing training courses on creating Mong ethnic musical instruments and using them and training courses on Mong ethnic language for cadres in the area.

Ha Giang also focused on developing Mong ethnic festivals such as Khau Vai love market festival in Khai Vai commune, Meo Vac district;  Mong musical instrument festival in Dong Van district; association with promoting cultural activities such as dancing, performances of Mong ethnic traditional clothes, weaving contests and cultural exchanges with Mong ethnic people. 

As of the end of 2016, about 200,00 Mong ethnic minority people lived in Ha Giang province, accounting for about 32% of its population. 

They are mainly concentrated in four stone plateau districts, including Meo Vac, Dong Van, Yen Minh and Quan Ba, and two mountainous districts in the west, including Hoang Su Phi and Xin Man.

There are about 22 ethnic minority groups living in the province. However, Mong ethnic group in the locality has diversified culture.
