The Northern province of Quang Ninh will host the 38th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) and the ASEAN Travel Expo (TRAVEX) in January next year.

Hosting the event will offer valuable opportunities for the country to popularise its people and popular attractive tourist destinations.

Around 1,500 delegates from ASEAN and dialogue partners (China, India Japan, the Republic of Korea and Russia), including tourism ministers, leaders from national travel agencies, representatives from travel agents, hotels and luxury resorts, and news agencies in and outside the region, will gather in the most important forum in the framework of ASEAN tourism cooperation.

There are some main activities such as official meetings of tourism ministers, opening and closing ceremonies, tourism conferences, TRAVEX tourism fair and visiting famous landscapes.

A source from Quang Ninh province said that it has invested in building a fair and exhibition palace designed to accommodate 300 indoor standard booths and 300 outdoor ones, 1,000 seat convention space and Tuan Chau multi-functional stage with 5,000 seat capacity.

Apart from major attractions and facilities that are being developed such as parks, golf courses and 4 and 5-star hotels, Van Don airport (scheduled to be in operation in the first quarter of 2018) together with Hai Phong city’s Cat Bi airport, will also facilitate the attendance of visitors and delegates to the events.

Earlier, Dispatch No.5492/VPCP-QHQT dated July 5th, 2016 has allowed the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to host the ATF 2019. This is the second time Vietnam hosts the event since 2009.

First launched in 1981 in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), ATF is the biggest annual event under the ASEAN tourism cooperation umbrella to promote the region as a single tourist destination where Asian hospitality and cultural diversity are featured. While the TRAVEX component is a trade-only mart that showcases the world's largest contingent of ASEAN destination products and services, and facilitates selling, buying and promoting the region internationally.

Member countries will take turns each year to host the event in alphabetical order.

Van Don airport is being built with total investment (the first stage) up to VND3,900 billion. Meeting 4E standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), it has the longest runway in Viet Nam, with 3.6km in length and 45m in width, in accordance with international standard with two layers of reinforced concrete, allowing wide body aircraft such as the Boeing 787, Airbus A350 to land normally.
