Hanoi hosted the May 16 launch of a promotional campaign from Mekong Delta tourism in the hope of attracting more domestic and international visitors to the region.
The launch's attendees included representatives from travel operators, hotels, restaurants, and businesses in both Hanoi and Mekong Delta provinces.
The campaign is part of the 2013 - 2020 tourism action programme that aims to boost the development of the local tourism industry.
It wants to offer tourism businesses opportunities to exchange information and take advantage of the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation.
Can Tho municipal People's Committee Deputy Chairman Vo Thanh Thong said Mekong Delta features, like local river and canal life, have proven popular with tourists in the past.
Last year the region welcomed 20 million visitors, including 1.6 million international arrivals, and earned over VND4,344 billion, he said.
Thong said improving the region's tourism requires closer collaboration between businesses and local authorities.
"We are linking travel agents and tourist destinations in the interests of offering better services. The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines is considering discounting flights to the Mekong Delta region," he added.
Similar promotional programmes had already been launched in the Red River Delta and Central Highlands regions.
