The Kon Tum Ethnic Group Culture and Sports Festival 2012 on the theme "Kon Tum - A Legendary Land" opened on November 7 to celebrate the upcoming Heritage Day (November 23) and the 100th anniversary of the province's establishment (1913-2013).
The four-day event has drawn the participation of 300 artisans and athletes from six local ethnic groups including Xe Dang, Ba Na, Gia Rai, Gie Trieng, Brau and Ro Mam, who will compete in traditional sporting events such as walking on stilts, tug-of-war, crossbow shooting and stick pushing.
The festival also features a wooden sculpture carving competition, a culinary festival, and a traditional costume fashion show, as well as gong performances and a street carnival.
The festival, held by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, aims to boost solidarity and exchanges between ethnic groups in the locality, and promote the province's traditional identities and indigenous cultures to domestic and international friends.
