Hai Phong strives for Cat Ba's World Heritage recognition

(TITC) - On 28th Sep. 2013, the People's Committee of Hai Phong City and the field evaluation mission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN - an advisory body to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization had a meeting to evaluate Cat Ba's nomination documents.

 

According to IUCN expert Peter Hitchcock, this is an indispensable requirement, the 3rd step in the evaluation process of nomination for Cat Ba archipelago inscribed on the World Natural Heritage list. After the evaluation, IUCN experts will submit their evaluation report to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for consideration.

 

Mr. Duong Anh Dien, Chairman of Hai Phong's People's Committee, affirmed that Vietnamese Government and the city have had a special interest in Cat Ba's biodiversity conservation for many years and Hai Phong City will strive for inscription of Cat Ba on the World Natural Heritage list.

 

At the meeting, the representatives of the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Management Board of Cat Ba archipelago natural heritage also showed the advantages of Cat Ba archipelago heritage site such as its tropical ecosystems and biodiversity.

 

After the meeting, IUCN experts will make a field trip around Cat Ba archipelago until 3rd October 2013.
