Ly Son Island

Location: Ly Son Island is located in the north-east of Quang Ngai Province, about 15 nautical miles (27km) from mainland.

Characteristics: Ly Son Island holds an important strategic position in the East Sea of Viet Nam and contains diversified tourism potential and valuable documents on Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago.

◊ Kingdom of Garlic

Ly Son Island, formerly known as Re Island, is biggest one in Ly Son Island District including 3 communes of An Vinh, An Binh and An Hai, with a total area of about 10km², about 24km from the mainland. The island is distinguished for its vast garlic fields, hence also called the kingdom of garlic.

 

◊ Gigantic Beauty

The island has some prominent craters, the largest of which is Thoi Loi Mountain. With other mountains such as Gieng Tien, Hon Vung, Hon Soi and Hoi Tai, these create the wild and gigantic beauty of Ly Son. Looking down from mountains, visitors will be overwhelmed by the spectacular colorful scenery with immense fields of green grass in the pan-shaped valley and a whole world of colors from the blue ocean, white sand, and red basalt soil to the green garlic fields.

 

 

◊ Unique Culture

Moreover, Ly Son is a lively museum of legends, stories, folk songs, spiritual festivals, etc, especially Feast and Commemoration Festival for Hoang Sa Soldiers. This used to be the departure point of the naval task group that protected the Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands under the Nguyen Dynasty. The island also preserves many documents on Hoang Sa Archipelago; numerous stone and ceramic objects of Cham and Dai Viet nations; etc to affirm Viet Nam’s sovereignty over sea and islands.

 

Nowadays, Ly Son Island is an attractive tourist destination where occupies unique natural landscapes as well as many cultural relics including Hang Pagoda, Duc Pagoda, An Hai Communal House, An Vinh Communal House, Cau Cave, Ba Roi Temple, Hoang Sa – Truong Sa Flotilla Relic, relics of Cham and Sa Huynh culture, etc. Of which, Hang Pagoda, An Vinh and An Hai Communal Houses and Am Linh Pagoda were recognized by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as national cultural – historical relics.

 

◊ How To Get There

Visitors can arrive in Ly Son Island by boats departing at Sa Ky Port (Binh Chau Commune, Binh Son District). It take 1h10 by high-speed boat (fare: VND 95,000/person) and 2h30 by wooden boat (fare: VND 30,000/person).
