With traditional kilns over 500 years old, Thanh Ha Pottery Village has become a popular destination for visitors exploring Hoi An Ancient Town in Quang Nam Province.

Nestled beside the picturesque Thu Bon River, Thanh Ha Pottery Village retains its old-world charm with a tranquil pace of life and warm and down-to-earth locals. The village primarily produces everyday ceramic objects such as piggy banks, earthen pots, vases, bricks, and tiles. In 2001, Hoi An City approved a plan to develop Thanh Ha Pottery Village as a tourist attraction, at which time only eight workshops remained committed to preserving the craft.
Shortly after, the Quang Nam Provincial People’s Committee swiftly approved the project for the restoration and development of Thanh Ha Traditional Craft Village in association with tourism activities. This new direction provided artisans and local households with motivation to continue their centuries-old craft. Today, the village is home to 110 households, with more than 30 directly involved in pottery production and tourism-related activities. Beyond preserving the craft and diversifying their products to expand the market, local artisans have introduced creative initiatives to enhance visitor engagement and hands-on experiences.
Currently, Thanh Ha Pottery Village offers a diverse range of tourism experiences, including artisan pottery demonstrations, hands-on pottery-making activities, homestay services, guided tours of the Terracotta Park, as well as refreshment and souvenir businesses. Among these, the hands-on pottery-making programme has quickly become a highlight, helping to sustain the craft village while expanding its community-based tourism ecosystem.
Before beginning their creations, visitors watch and listen to artisans as they carefully explain each step of the process. Throughout the activity, each guest receives one-on-one guidance, with artisans correcting mistakes and providing support. After shaping their clay pieces, participants decorate their works before sending them to be dried or fired in the kiln. While waiting for their pottery to dry, visitors can explore the village’s workshops, browse its exhibition spaces, and engage with artisans to learn more about the craft’s history and techniques.
Recently, Hoi An City approved a plan to develop a sustainable tourism route within Thanh Ha Pottery Village. The initiative aims for 100% of homestay businesses and 50% of pottery production and experience workshops to meet green tourism standards.
