U.S. artist exhibits photos about Viet Nam
Update: Dec 04, 2015
Lawrence D’Attilio, a photographer from New York, is exhibiting his photos about Viet Nam and its people at Work Room Four in Ha Noi.

“The Soul of Viet Nam” exhibition is his fifth with the first two held in 2008 at Studio Tho and Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum in Viet Nam. The two subsequent exhibitions were organized by Tamarack Gallery in Wisconsin in 2012, and the Museum of the Gulf in Texas in 2014.

Running until December 13, the exhibition at Work Room Four showcases 35 images taken between 2007 and 2015. The three main themes of the exhibition are landscapes, characters and different moments to express his feelings and viewpoints about the country.

According to the organizer, when using the methods of traditional photography, the biggest challenge for D’Attilio is how to escape the framework of a tourist photo or a souvenir postcard. To overcome that challenge, he shortened the path to communicate with the people and landscapes of Viet Nam by his deep sympathy for the land.

Through a microloan project to help people in Lap Thach District in the northern province of Vinh Phuc which he directly supported, he learned the story of the life and attitudes of people living in Viet Nam, especially of Vietnamese women. Their braveness and courage in facing difficulties and their ethics have become a solid foundation for the family, which has more or less changed him and inspired his family members to come to Viet Nam for new work and new life.

“I can say that my life has been very enriched by the culture, people, history and land in Viet Nam. It has re-defined me in ways I could not have dreamed of before I first arrived in Viet Nam in 2006,” he says.

Work Room Four is a co-working space located at 24th Floor, Packexim Building Tower 1, No. 49, Lane 15, An Duong Vuong Street, Tay Ho District.
