'Kieu', the ballet based on Nguyen Du's epic poem 'The Tale of Kieu’, will return to the audience on May 13-14, at the Saigon Opera House.
The Ballet Kieu is performed by artists from the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO).
"Kieu" is one of the theatre’s most successful plays, with a skilful combination of the world's classic ballet art achievements, with the quintessential values of traditional Vietnamese art.
People's Artist Chu Thuy Quynh and People's Artist Ung Duy Thinh direct the art, adapting the script and the general director is artist Tuyet Minh. Artists Nguyen Phuc Hung and Tuyet Minh jointly choreographed the entire work.
Musicians Viet Anh and Chinh Ba are in charge of the music for the show.
The work focuses on the fate of women in feudal society and their aspiration for love and happiness.
'The Tale of Kieu’ recounts the life, trials and tribulations of Thuy Kieu, a beautiful and talented young woman, who sacrificed herself to save her father and younger brother from prison.
Kieu sold herself into marriage to a middle-aged man, unaware of his profession as a pimp. He later forced her into prostitution, marking the start of a series of tragic events in her life.
