Update: Oct 27, 2009
The People’s Committee of Can Tho City coordinated with related departments on October 26 to build a consensus on permitting Dia Cau Trading and Service Co. Ltd to create a promenade and food court on Ninh Kieu Wharf to attract domestic and foreign tourists.

The construction is part of the lead-up to the “Mekong-Japan Tourism and Culture Festival” to be held in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on December 1-5.

The 200m-area will stretch from the International Hotel to Ngo Quyen, Hai Ba Trung, Nguyen Thai Hoc and Vo Van Tan streets and end at the Old Market in Tan An Ward, Ninh Kieu District.

The new quarter will operate from 6pm to 4am. With an estimated investment capital of VND4.5 billion, the project will consist of a pedestrian path, food area, night market and souvenir area.

The project is expected to promote trade, create jobs for hundreds of workers, increase the living standard of the local people and provide a lively atmosphere in which to enjoy the culture of the Mekong River Delta.

The project will be up and running in late November.
