Xam music comes on stage in capital
Update: Oct 26, 2012
A xam folk music performance will be held in Vietnam Women's Museum from Friday to Sunday, reproducing a unique cultural feature of Hanoi's old quarters for visitors.

The program "electric train xam - Ha Thanh's street culture" will bring to local and foreign visitors the differences of contemporary xam with traditional from the lyrics, musical instruments to costumes and performance style.

Audiences will be involved via talk shows and performances of xam experts and meritorious artists Hoang Anh Tu, Thanh Tam Tam, Thanh Ngoan and The Dan.

Xam singing is an ancient folk genre from northern Vietnam with the two major genres of xam cho (xam singing performed at markets) and xam co dau (performed in groups at drinking establishments). Only Hanoi has xam tau dien and it is well known for being performed on the city's trams.

Xam tau dien is a brand of folk music that used to be performed on the trams, a popular means of public transport in the capital at the beginning of the 20th century.

When the tram lines were abandoned in the 1980s, xam tau dien disappeared and xam gradually fell into oblivion. Facing the unstoppable decline of xam, researchers and devoted artists tried, but failed to revitalize the art form.

Nowadays, xam is considered an endangered form of Vietnamese traditional music because the number of experienced artists has rapidly declined. The younger generation usually prefers modern types of music.

Moreover, visitors to the museum will have a chance to take a glimpse of Hanoi via 3D paintings and local specialties.
