Update: Jul 22, 2013
Basic conditions for a dossier submitted to UNESCO for the recognition of Hue singing as an oral and intangible cultural heritage of humanity were determined at a workshop in central Thua Thien-Hue province on July 20.
The event, which aimed at preserving and upholding artistic values of Hue singing, was held by the Hue city's Academy of Music with the attendance of numerous researchers and artisans.

At the workshop, participants focused on the origin and development of Hue singing, its role in the nation's traditional music, as well as its features and artistic values.

They also reviewed different periods of development in history of Hue singing and the change of the performance environment, and discussed ways to preserve this old form of singing in Vietnam.

Statistics show that over 10,000 shows of Hue singing are held every year to serve 160,000 turns of audience.

At present, as many as 457 singers and instrumentalists were licensed to perform the art along the Huong River.
