The demand for domestic tourism information searching plummeted due to the prolonged impact of pandemic
Update: Aug 05, 2021
(TITC) From the end of April to the beginning of May 2021 to now, the 4th outbreak of pandemic once again seriously affected domestic tourism activities. According to data from Google's Destination Insights tool, demand for domestic tourists information searching decreased sharply.
From the beginning of March to the end of April 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic was under control, the demand of searching on domestic travel information increased sharply compared to the first 3 months of the year as well as compared to the same period of 2020. But from the end of April 2021, the 4th outbreak of pandemic in Viet Nam has happened, and then the search of domestic tourism rapidly decreased and remained at a very low level (figure 1).

This is also consistent with the statistics of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism on domestic visitors. In April 2021, domestic visitors reached 9 million arrivals, decreased to 3.5 million in May, 1.5 million in June and 0.5 million in July.

The demand for tourist accommodation information searching also increased rapidly in March and April, then decreased sharply from the beginning of May until now, sometimes down by nearly 90% compared to the same period in 2020 (figure 2).

In fact, after the 4th outbreak of pandemic, in major tourist centers, there was a very large cancellation rate, over 90%, tourist accommodation establishments had to close. Some facilities are still operating mainly for isolation and pandemic prevention and some are moderate maintain.

Statistics from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism on over-night domestic tourists also show a similar trend. Viet Nam had 4.6 million over-night visitors in April 2021, downed to 1.8 million in May, 0.9 million in June and 0.3 million in July.

Similar to the general downward trend, the demand for aviation information searching from May to now has also almost bottomed, down by 85% compared to the same period in 2020 (figure 3).
