A rare March frost appeared in Ta Xua (Ban Cong Commune, Tram Tau District, Yen Bai) on the morning of March 19, surprising both locals and tourists. The unseasonal phenomenon has drawn significant attention, as frost typically occurs in December and January, or at the latest, February.

Unusual weather phenomenon

According to Dao Viet Nghiem, chairman of Ban Cong Commune, frost in Ta Xua is not uncommon but usually only forms in mid-winter.

“This is the first time we’ve seen frost appear in March,” Nghiem said. “The white frost covered trees and plants across the area, creating a breathtaking sight.”

The most recent frost in Ta Xua before this occurred on January 11, when a strong cold front swept through the region.

How does frost form?

Frost forms when ground temperatures drop to 0°C, while the air temperature remains above freezing. The moisture near the surface condenses and crystallizes, forming delicate ice particles that cling to plants, soil, and surfaces, turning the landscape into a winter wonderland.

This phenomenon typically occurs between midnight and early morning, lasting until 7–9 a.m., when it melts under the sunlight.

At an altitude of over 2,800 meters, Ta Xua is famous for cloud hunting and is one of Vietnam’s rare frost-covered regions during winter. The latest frost occurrence in March adds to the region’s natural allure, making it a must-visit destination for weather enthusiasts and photographers.
