A variety of activities are taking place in Vietnam and around the rest of the world to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory (May 7).
In the northern province of Dien Bien, about 210 photographs capturing the Vietnam’s 1954 Dien Bien Phu victory are on display at an exhibition from May 1-8. The exhibition gives visitors an insight into the land and people in Dien Bien province.
A new museum dedicated to the Dien Bien Phu victory was inaugurated in Dien Bien province on May 5. The new museum has been rebuilt from the old one established in 1984 in Muong Thanh district, Dien Bien city. Spread over a total area of 22,000 square metres, the new museum, in the first phase, has about 1,000 objects divided into four exhibit sections, featuring the strategic location of Dien Bien Phu, the enemy's scheme at Dien Bien Phu, the Party's guideline regarding preparations for the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, the impact of Dien Bien Phu at home and abroad and the present-day Dien Bien Phu. In the second phase, which is expected to be completed by 2016, it will have a panoramic picture recounting the nine-year long Dien Bien Phu battle against the French meticulously.
In Hanoi, as many of 120 photos about Dien Bien Phu selected from thousand documentary photos about Dien Bien Phu victory and Dien Dien province taken by reporters from Vietnam News Agency are on display at an exhibition which opened May 5. The exhibition will run at the headquarter of the Vietnam News Agency at 5 Ly Thuong Kiet street until May 12.
In the central province of Quang Binh, a photo exhibition entitled “Dien Bien Phu - A golden epic” opened on May 4 at the grave of General Vo Nguyen Giap on Yen Island. As many of 60 photos depicting the Dien Bien Phu campaign and General Giap are being displayed.
In the southern city of Can Tho, the University of Can Tho and the municipal Association of War Veterans held a meeting between 200 veterans of the wars against the French and Americans with more than 1,000 local students. Organised by the municipal youth union, the event aimed to help young people learn more about the war during the Dien Bien Phu campaign through the stories of veterans who fought in the battle.
A special art performance entitled “Dien Bien Phu - The everlasting epic" will start at 8pm on May 7 in Dien Bien Phu city. The two-hour show promises a unique and impressive portrayal of the global event.
