Travel is becoming increasingly convenient and faster thanks to modern technology and advanced modes of transport. However, railway tourism, a type of slow, "old but gold" form of travel, is gradually regaining attention and popularity among domestic and foreign visitors.

A hotel on train wheels
Unlike the speed and convenience of airplanes or cars, trains offer passengers a leisurely, comfortable, and emotionally rich journey. These specialized trains are designed like mobile hotels, featuring neat, cozy carriages and onboard amenities for dining and entertainment that cater to a wide range of needs.
Their greatest appeal lies beyond the windows, where ever-changing scenery unfolds from mountains to sea, from windswept plains to vibrant flower forests, turning each journey into a living landscape painting.
For instance, the Da Nang - Hue route, passing through Lang Co Bay and Hai Van Pass, offers breathtaking views of clouds, mountains, and the sea. Meanwhile, the Saigon - Nha Trang route runs along pristine beaches, allowing passengers to catch sunrise or sunset right from their windows.
On the Da Lat - Trai Mat route, from the first to the third lunar months, passengers can enjoy cool, clear weather and blue skies, along with blooming bell-shaped cherry blossoms. The Muong Hoa mountain railway in Sa Pa quietly winds through villages hidden in the mist, with the majestic Hoang Lien Son mountain range in the distance.
In 2021, CNN named six of Asia’s most remarkable train journeys, including Viet Nam’s representative, The Vietage by Anantara, which connects Da Nang and Quy Nhon. Offering five-star-hotel-level amenities, the train allows passengers to relax in luxurious surroundings, enjoy champagne, cocktails, and light snacks on board, and have a memorable journey.
The renowned international travel website Lonely Planet also ranked the North-South Reunification Express at the top of its list of the "24 most incredible train journeys in the world in 2025". This 1,730km route is considered a great way to explore the depth, poetic beauty, and intimate charm of Vietnam.

A favorite mean of transport among the young
Since 2024, domestic travel is witnessing an interesting shift, with trains unexpectedly becoming the most favored mode of transport among young people, particularly Generation Z.
The younger generation, accustomed to convenience, modernity, and always seeking unique experiences, is now captivated by the slow, emotional journey that trains offer. For them, it's not just a means of transportation, but a beautiful and profound lifestyle.
On social media, it's not difficult to find heartwarming stories about journeys across Vietnam by train. Many young travelers delight in purchasing round-trip tickets from the outset and never disembarking at intermediate stations, spending the entire time onboard to embrace a gentle rhythm of life, thereby transforming the journey itself into the destination.
The gentle emotions, the colorful landscapes, and the profound experiences offered by railway tourism are a cherished gift for anyone wanting to explore Vietnam in a fresher and more complete way.
