The first-ever Vietnamese reading festival will be held at the Literature Temple in Hanoi on April 23 under the theme ‘Reading for tomorrow’.
Several contests will take place at the event including book arrangements, drawing, reading, writing and speaking about favorite books, which will mostly target the younger readers.
There is also a speaking contest on the reading culture, fast reading skills, book exhibitions and book donations for libraries.
A campaign to collect signatures to vote for April 23 to become annual reading day for the nation will be an important part of the day.
According to the organizers, this is the first time the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has carried out Vietnam’s reading day, which is part of a strategy to develop literary culture until 2020.
The ministry also plans to organize a series of activities this year, including a reading contest for young people in Laos on doctor/revolutionary martyr Dang Thuy Tram’s book titled “Dang Thuy Tram’s diary’, making a documentary film on libraries and a television debate to help find solutions to develop literary culture in Vietnam.
