Ha Giang develops sustainable tourism in Dong Van Geopark
Update: May 16, 2025
The Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark, recognised by UNESCO in 2010, has opened a new chapter for Ha Giang’s tourism.

Covering four districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac, the geopark boasts over 80 sites of rare geological, geomorphological and palaeontological heritage, providing vivid evidence of Earth’s formation over hundreds of millions of years.

Beyond its geological value, the Dong Van Karst Plateau serves as a “living museum” of ethnic minority cultures, creating a diversity and allure that few places can match.

Traditional earthen houses in Lo Lo Chai Village, Lung Cu Commune, have been renovated into homestays.

As planned, by 2030 the geopark will become a national tourism area. Ha Giang has identified heritage-based tourism development as a harmonious balance between conservation and economic development, between tradition and modernity.

The province has enhanced communication, community education, scientific research, and specific policy development, while simultaneously improving infrastructure, livelihoods, and traditional village crafts for residents in heritage areas.

Notably, indigenous culture has been brought to life to become unique tourism products, from traditional living spaces to experiential activities such as baking, linen weaving, crafting Hmong pipes, enjoying local cuisine and more.

Experiential tourism routes, explorations and traditional festivals such as the Buckwheat Flower Festival, Khau Vai Love Market, and Hmong Pipe Festival have attracted large numbers of domestic and international visitors. As a result, Ha Giang’s tourism brand has become increasingly well-established.

In 2024, the province welcomed more than 3.2 million visitors, reaching the target two years ahead of schedule. During the April 30-May 1, 2025 holiday period alone, there were over 146,200 visitors, including 9,200 foreign tourists.

However, the province recognises that heritage tourism development must proceed cautiously, avoiding rapid unsustainable growth while preserving the landscape and ecological environment.

Ha Giang is focusing on sustainable planning, workforce training, digital technology application, and particularly emphasising community roles in preserving and utilising heritage, ensuring long-term and sustainable development.
